Dear President Guerrero and Members of the Wiseburn School Board:

Subject: Report on Dana and Cabrillo Footprints Survey

In September 2003, the Hollyglen Homeowners Association (HHA) distributed an update on the rebuilding of Dana and Cabrillo schools along with an Opinion Poll on the proposed footprints to the entire Hollyglen community.

The HHA received 189 responses to the survey representing 181 households, and 6 surveys without name or address given. Results are as follows:

156 households preferred Dana Option 1
“I prefer to have Dana School remain close to its current location (near Aviation and 135th St.) and have the fields also remain in their current location (Stay as is)”

31 households preferred Dana Option 2
“I prefer to have Dana relocated to the corner of 135th and Isis, and have the fields moved to the Aviation side of the site (Change)”

152 households preferred Cabrillo Option 1
“I prefer to have Cabrillo School remain in its current location with the entrance for student drop-off / pick-up remaining on 135th St. (Stay as is)”

35 households preferred Cabrillo Option 2
“I prefer to have Cabrillo School relocated to the 134th St. side with the entrance for student drop-off / pick-up on 134th St. (Change)”

Attached is a graph of the survey results. We would like to invite the School Board members to meet with the HHA and members of the committee to share the community's comments, concerns, and to discuss questions.

In addition to conducting the survey, the HHA solicited comments on the proposed school footprints from the City of Hawthorne staff.

The City's Traffic Engineer reviewed the two options for each schools, and provided the following comments:

Dana ·

  • Option 1 is preferred because it provides substantially more parking, and does not alter existing traffic circulation patterns, and is better than existing layout. ·
  • Option 2 is less desirable because it provides less parking, brings school traffic further into the residential neighborhood, and shifts traffic in front of residences on 135th.

    Cabrillo ·

  • Option 1 is preferred because it keeps the majority of traffic on 135th St., which is wide enough to handle the school traffic, and does not increase traffic on residential streets. ·
  • Option 2 is less desirable because it would bring the school traffic onto narrower residential streets, and 134th St. is currently too narrow to accommodate two-way traffic plus parking on both sides. This option would require widening of 134th St.

The Hawthorne Planning Department reviewed the footprint options, and will be sending a letter to the School Board regarding their concerns about traffic and other impacts Cabrillo Option 2 would have on residential properties. Regarding the Dana options, their only concern was the reduction of parking spaces with Dana Option 2.

The Hollyglen Homeowners Association recommends the School Board follow the community's and City of Hawthorne's preference, and go with Option1 for both the new Dana and Cabrillo schools.

    Sincerely,

    Cindy Parsons
