Rebuilding Dana and Cabrillo Schools

Status Report and Opinion Survey

The Wiseburn School District is currently planning the construction of 2 new schools to replace the existing Dana Middle and Cabrillo Elementary Schools in Hollyglen. These new schools will be what the District and the Hollyglen community will be living with for the next 50+ years.

The School Board will be making several important decisions for this project -- probably within the next 60 -90 days -- including the location (footprint) and entrances for the new schools.

Last year, the District solicited community input on four options (red, white, blue, and silver) for where to locate the new schools. The response, including a petition signed by about 125 residents, favored keeping both schools in their current locations. The School Board decided to go with the "light blue" scenario, which combines simultaneous construction (saves money) with rebuilding both schools in the vicinity of their current locations.

The District is working with a construction management company and architect on this project, and school design committees have met to help design the new schools. The committees have narrowed down the possibilities to two different scenarios for each school:

Dana

  1. New school would be built just east of the existing school. The parking lot would remain at the corner of Aviation & 135th with access from both streets, and a student drop-off / pick-up would be added on 135th at the front entrance of the new school. The fields would remain in their current location (as it currently is).
  2. New school would be built on the corner of Isis and 135th. The parking lot would be located along 135th in front of the school with 2 driveways on 135th (no access from Isis). The fields would be moved to the Aviation side (fields and school switch places).

Cabrillo

  1. New school would be built slightly overlapping the existing footprint. Entrance for student drop-off and pick-up would remain on 135th (as it currently is).
  2. New school would be "turned around" so that entry would be on 134th. Entrance for student drop-off and pick-up would change to 134th (entrance switches from 135th St. to 134th St.).

Community Opinion Poll

On the reverse side of this notice is an opinion poll. Please take a few minutes to evaluate the options and mark which ones you feel will be best for the new Dana and Cabrillo schools. The Hollyglen Homeowners Association will provide this community input to the School Board to assist them in making a decision in the best interest of the students and the entire Hollyglen community.
